First Year a da Rat Writing Contest Prompt for January 2021

Okay.  Here’s to a healthier and one hell of a happier 2021.  Let’s write.  Good therapy.

This month the word count is exactly 75 words.  Not 74, not 76, or 75 and a half.  Exactly 75 words.

Prompts:

1.  From “Mauna Loa,” by D. Keaweehu

The fog often settles on the slopes of Mauna Loa, settles and remains for days and days.  It deprives the hiker of all visual cues, he cannot see the sun, or stars, or Mauna Kea “just across the saddle.”  He sees nothing but lava rock, dry streams of lava, waves and cliffs of lava, pavements of lava and shallow, snaggle-toothed caves of lava.  Somewhere, perhaps in one of those shallow caves, perhaps lying in a heap on the brittle needles of lava sheets, somewhere I say, is that Canadian geologist.  A year older, certainly lighter in weight and smaller in girth is he, and still lost.
