The Power of a Word

I had not heard the word pronounced like that for years! The talkative nonagenarian at the bus stop said, “Chirren.” OMG!! Nostalgia spread through my entire being.
“Grandma!!! That’s how you said ‘children’!!” I thought that the kupuna who spoke like that had all died, but I was wrong! “Chirren” filled me with the warm memory of my maké gramma.
Spoken language is ever changing. No one pronounces "children" like my grandma’s generation. We date ourselves by the expressions we understand and by how we speak. What utterance will remind my granddaughter of me after I am gone?
