A few years ago, before I started college, I had to make a decision of staying in Kona and going to HCC or going to UH Hilo or Manoa. Throughout highschool, I always planned to leave home for college, and by senior year I still had the same plans. I had already been accepted into UH and had meetings with counselors about my course and major. One day my mom sat me down to talk about my plans, what I wanted to do. During that time, our family was not doing so well financially. She did not tell me directly, but I got that feeling. We couldn’t afford it if I left home for college. They would have to take out loans and work harder than they already do. So, I thought about it for a few days and came to the decision to stay home. I decided to go to HCC and work at the same time to help my parents. My parents sacrificed a lot for me, the least I could do is sacrifice a bit for them.
