Still looking down at the check, it took her a second to answer. “Oh it’s tiny, but no, that wasn’t it….” She glanced up, met my eyes, and then flushed as she processed the check from my sales and marketing freelance job.

I didn’t understand then the impression I had made; I mirrored her strained smile.

The following month, I noticed surreptitious ogling from other tellers, but understanding eluded me until perusing my mailed bank statement.
