Nānā iho nā akua i ka noʻonoʻo

Lele aʻe ka pueo

Kāhea ka ʻalalā

ʻĀ mai nei ka imu.

The Woman Sleeps

The ‘awa-drinking woman sleeps peacefully

the kou-skinned man cries

The ‘ulu tree is his night companion

The banana-eating bird is the guilty one

The gods look down in thought

The owl flies

The crow calls out

The fire in the pit burns.
