So last night as Christy Passion, put it, I was a "human traffic cone." We were recording a CD of the renshi poets at the Hawaii Public Radio studio and a weird thumping from outside the building caused us to stop. It was from a wobbly cover to the Hawaiian Electric wiring vault in the sidewalk which "thumped" every time a pedestrian (or in this case a homeless man with a shopping cart moved his cart across it to another location). Being helpful, I volunteered to go stand outside on the concrete cover so that folks had to walk around me to get past. No noise, no thumping…a perfect recording! Ah, the human traffic cone!
Besides buying Bamboo Ridge Press books for your Christmas presents for friends and family members here and far away (far away is good, to give them the nostalgic, pining-for-Hawaiʻi moments), I thought of sharing a couple of other books with you: by Junot Diaz "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," by Elizabeth Strout, "Olive Kitteridge," by Bill Bryson, (forgot title) a dictionary about science for the science buffs, and "The Iconic House," if you like architecture. Let me know if you pick any of these up and like it.
Teachers, a must read is Romano’s "The Authentic Voice." It is timeless. How wonderful if we could teach in this way. (Big Sigh!)
