Talk story

  1. Jean Toyama says:

Hi Ashley,Thank you for for question. Yes, I often think that what I have written is not good; in fact I know it, I just have to rewrite. Ha Jin a novelist says that he usually rewrites something 35 times before it's where he wants it. That seems daunting, but if I (you) really want to write, I guess we just have to work at it. So if I'm on rewrite # 10 and I still don't like it, I can think 25 more and it should get better. It's the working at it that's fun, too.

  2. Jean Toyama says:

    Hi Jian,
Your wish is my command. I just started a renshi that you students can continue. You have to be registered to post a poem. Whoever is first, starts, continues, etc.
I don't know what's going to happen, we shall see.

Hi my name is Britney and I really enjoyed the poetry you wrote. Thank you for sharing your poetry with us. You're an inspiration to me. I like creative writing because I can express how I'm feeling or write whatever is on my mind. I'm not exactly a poetry type writer but I'd like to know what kind of suggestions on how to pull in readers with the first sentence of any piece of writing?

  4. Jian says:

Thank you for starting the renshi for us to work on. I'm so excited to see what everyone can come up with! It's like a little adventure we depart on together!

  5. the special kid says:

Hello, my name is Aly and i really enjoyed all of the poetry you wrote and shared with us. Thank you for taking time out of your busy scedule to come visit us at our school. Your poetry was very inspiring to me and made me open my eyes to the new ideas in poetry styles. I'm nt really the writing type of person, but do you have any advice for someone like me who wants to write?

  6. Ashley says:

Thank you for putting up a place where we can do renshi–I'm really excited! (Thank you too Jian, hah hah xP you awesome anime person). Thank you also for the good advice. I really hope to be a good writer like you someday!

  7. Lady Smurf says:

    Hello!

Dr.Toyama, it really means a lot for all of us at the Priory that you and your co-writers took time out of your schedule to share your stories and poetry with us. I've always been interested in writing, and your visit really opened my eyes to other possibilities and forms of writing that I would never have thought of by myself. The only thing is, that whenever I write something, I need to have the perfect first sentence, or the story gets nowhere!!!! Do you have any advice to help me with that?

  10. Shinigami808 says:

Hey Ms. Toyama, thankz for coming to our school the other day; we all really appreciate the time you took out to spend with us, and I think I speak for most of us when I say we all really had a good time and learned a lot. For English, some of my classmates and I will be writing some renshi poems. Do you have any tips for me and my peers?

  11. MyAsianNinja says:

    Hello!
This is Lyn and I found your renshis to be very interesting I also noticed how each story was different from each other. I enjoyed listening to each of your story on how you got your inspiration. Thank you for coming to our school and enlightening us on what renshis are and how much fun they can be!

  12. Lanisa says:

I just wanted to say that i enjoyed your visit to our school and I enjoyed the poetry that was read. I can't write to deadline because i work solely on impulse, but i want to know if you've ever had that experience. And is it a bad thing when you work renshi?

    Thank you again,
    Lanisa

  13. Catherine says:

Hi, my name is Emalani. I'm not much of a writer, but I try my best to be creative. You're poems were moving and interesting. While you were reading I was able to picture the words into actions. I felt like the poems were teaching me things about life, and they were very inspirational. Thank you for coming to the Priory, and hopefully you'll visit again.
