The trial in 1931 took place during the month of November and here we were in December, 2011. I can't remember the exact date, but I felt an urgency to get the story of the trial and the jury deliberations into the renshi. I reread the parts concerning this time period in Hawaii Scandal and Honor Killing.

On December 2, 1932 after 8:00 pm the jury was told to come to a verdict. Days passed. They couldn't agree. One day a guard heard a chair flung against the wall. Someone said, "Bastard." The fight was stopped. The judge lectured them. The jury tried again. In the end over 100 votes were taken.

It ended in a mistrial.
