Open Call to College-Aged Artists

Bamboo Ridge Press is an independent, Hawai‘i-based nonprofit in search of a college-aged (17-22) artist from Hawai‘i to reimagine our fish logo for a special, limited-edition merchandise and fundraising project run on printful.com.

The artist whose work is chosen will receive a $50 honorarium; a book bundle; choice of a shirt or tote; and will have their design featured on a t-shirt and tote bag which will be promoted through Bamboo Ridge’s website, social media channels, and our eNewsletter.

Bamboo Ridge Press is interested in receiving a piece that is a fresh take on the two fish logo, or a creative design that incorporates it. Feel free to take any and all artistic liberties. Artists may include any designs they make for this project in their portfolios, but any likeness of the fish logo may not be used in any projects external to this campaign.

All artists must upload their work and fill out the submission form by the deadline on Saturday, October 3 at 11:59 P.M.. We ask that you only fill out the form once, but you may submit up to a total of three different designs; the design will be used for t-shirts and tote bags. Each design should have an accompanying artist statement. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

Deadline: Saturday, October 3, 11:59 P.M. HST

File requirements: 12” x 16” print file size, transparent .PNG 350 DPI; files must be created in the sRGB color profile. Please label photos as: Last Name_Fish; if you submit more than one design, please include the number (i.e. Last Name_Fish_1).

Additional information: Tote bag color #060606; t-shirt color #27262b & #35353F. Please avoid semi-transparent designs since they do not translate well in Printful’s direct to garment (DTG) printing method.

*Your artistic contribution will help to raise much needed funds that enable us to continue our support of artists and writers with unique and underrepresented voices.

Bamboo Ridge Press is a nonprofit founded in 1978 to publish literature and art by, for, and about Hawaiʻi’s people. We currently release two volumes a year: a literary journal of poetry and fiction featuring work by both emerging and established writers, and a book by a single author or an anthology focused on a special theme. In forty plus years we’ve published a diverse catalog of poetry, prose, screenplays, stage plays, novels, and more.

While special attention is given to literature that reflects an island sensibility, Bamboo Ridge is broad in scope and embraces a variety of work from writers across the globe. Each regular issue of the journal also includes an artist profile and picture gallery with a featured work chosen for the cover.
