No laulau left for da locals

We used to come here, ono for laulau. Joyful…
Before the national television network came.
Now, the place is spilling tourists.
It’s good for business.

We order, the waitress shakes her head.
We end up with chicken luau—not da same.
We wait and watch dolefully.
Barely touched laulaus are scraped off tourists’ plates into the trash.

They hang a sign, “NO MORE LAULAU”.
A local family turns back to their car.
Tourists head for the autograph photo the network left behind…
Take pictures, order one of everything, send half back in the rubbish.
We eat solemnly—not da same.
