This Couple

Driving, we’re off to Petland for fish. He broke up with her, a one-month wound. I’m single too—alone since forever. Smells like musty farm inside, the usual. We head to the back.

“Different now, not like before. I can’t stop thinking,” he says. “About her, about us.”

She’s not worth it, I say.

“I don’t want to think about anything else. Funny, yeah?”

Not really. He shrugs, looking in.

“I like these ones,” he says. Clown fish. “Interesting.”

He stares. Two swim to the glass and stare back. I look too. He sighs, smiles weakly.

“Funny, this couple. Kinda sad also. They’re delicate, you know.”
